But Samsung Portable SSD T5 is here to change this perception. Looking at the size of this storage device, you will realize that it is not bigger than a stack of credit cards. As a matter of fact, this external storage SSD is almost of the same size that of Kingston’s DataTraveler Ultimate GT USB Drive.

This portable SSD is pretty impressive with its 10Gbps USB 3.1 Type-C Gen 2 model which has replaced conventional connector in order to give twice the maximum transfer rate of its predecessors.

Nevertheless, this portable SSD comes with a massive price tag, i.e. $510 for 1TB version. That’s where you might start wondering if the purchase of this portable SSD is worth it.

Hardware

The memory sizes range from 250GB to 2TB. There is an ASMedia mSATA-to-USB bridge controller included in the package of Samsung Portable SSD T5.

The major improvement is made in form of more advanced 64-layer 3D V-NAND Triple Level Cell flash memory, an updated firmware, and the support for TRIM with the help of UASP (USB attached SCSI) protocol.

Since this drive doesn’t work on the default exFAT file system, you may have to format the drive to NTFS in order to improve its performance.

Another great addition to the features of this drive is that it is compatible with android devices. It is resistant to shock with a capability to endure the drops of up to 2 meters.

Performance

The performance of Samsung Portable SSD T5 was tested by using a USB Type-C Gen 1 connector. In CrystalDiskMark test, this drive achieved the read/write speeds of 433MBps and 323MBps respectively. And under ATTO, the read/write speeds were measured as 462Mbps and 323MBps. Using Teracopy, this drive managed to transfer a 10GB file in just 47 seconds. This way, the real-time transfer rate was recorded as 212MBps.
